Gay used to think it was a sign of my advancing years that I was realising the value of knowing our history. While there have, undoubtedly, been significant milestones in LGBT history in earlier decades, I believe the 80s was a particularly important period.
British groups like Pet Shop Boys, Visage, Bronski Beat, and Soft Cell were all part of the backbone of the hedonistic ’80s, pioneering the dramatic pairing of synthesizers with dance floor rhythms. Homophobia was prevalent, and coming out as gay often meant facing severe discrimination, ostracism, or even violence.
